Family, Support, and Knowing When to Stand on Your Own

Family is there when you need it. Sure, and pigs fly on Thursdays. The moment I actually needed help, suddenly I’m “taking advantage.” Right. Because unconditional love clearly comes with a side of guilt, conditions, and passive-aggressive commentary.

A lift in the rain? Outrageous. Especially when my partner’s asthma and overall health make exposure to cold and damp a real risk. Recently, both my partner and I had important appointments, and my partner also needed medical care — obligations that couldn’t be skipped. Let’s be clear: I wasn’t asking for anything outrageous — just practical, reasonable help to get through the day. If I wanted to exploit anyone, I’d be demanding hundreds of pounds to expand my online store. Instead, I’m actively pursuing grants, researching options, and planning responsibly.

I never expected anyone to provide extra support; any help received was purely voluntary. To avoid relying on family, I handled the rest using other methods — because, surprise surprise, I anticipated exactly this kind of reaction.

Here’s the revolutionary part: real help counts when it’s needed, not when it’s convenient. Anyone can appear generous when it suits them. The real test is showing up when it matters — and apparently, that’s too much to ask.

If you genuinely want to support our expansion into board and card games, there’s another post on that. Short version: buying larger or pricier items from our store directly helps us grow and continue creating opportunities responsibly.

Lesson learned: self-reliance, planning, and persistence outweigh empty words and performative generosity every time. Some people will never see the value in what I’m doing. Fine. I’ll keep moving forward anyway — with zero theatrics and zero apologies.
