Weirdest Live Chat Moments – Volume 14: Caverns, Candles & Cautionary Physics

Some live chats make you smile. Others leave you blinking at the screen wondering if you’ve slipped into a Monty Python sketch.

This one starts normally enough — a visitor browses our candle section, specifically the church candles, and opens the chat:

“I’m interested in purchasing about 3,000 of your church candles but needed some further information.”

Naturally, we ask what they’d like to know.

It turns out their group does a lot of cavern scaling (yes, cavern scaling), and they’re exploring whether church candles could function as… flares.

To be used in tight caverns.
Dropped from 500 metres.
To avoid — and I quote — abseiling into a pack of wolves.

We gently advised that our candles provide light, sure — but they aren’t designed to function as flares, and likely wouldn’t survive a 500m freefall, silicone coating or not.

The customer reassured us they didn’t expect us to test that out ourselves.
(Thanks for the mercy.)

They finished by saying they’d check with their physicist before proceeding.
We’re still waiting on the verdict.
