The Rise of Health-Hyped Coffee
In recent years, brands like Exhale Coffee have stepped into the spotlight by promoting coffee not just as a beverage—but as a functional health product. Exhale Coffee is marketed as “the UK’s first speciality coffee with health claims backed by science,” and they make a variety of bold assertions about their beans, such as:
- “Tested free from mould, mycotoxins and pesticides”
- “High in antioxidants like polyphenols”
- “Supports your immune system, energy levels, and performance”
- “Brewed for health, not just taste”
While that may sound impressive at first glance, let’s dig a little deeper into what’s really being said—and what might be misleading.
Where the Claims Fall Apart
Many of the health-focused statements made by Exhale rely heavily on vague or generalised scientific references. For example, their mention of antioxidants like polyphenols isn’t unusual—all coffee contains polyphenols to some degree, particularly if it’s high-quality and freshly roasted. That doesn’t make Exhale Coffee unique.
About Toxins and Mould
Exhale also stresses their beans are tested for mycotoxins—naturally occurring toxins that come from moulds. However, mycotoxins are already tightly regulated in food and drink in the UK. Any reputable roaster sourcing coffee through safe and legal channels is highly unlikely to be selling contaminated beans.
It’s worth asking: are such statements meant to inform, or to scare customers away from other coffees?
The Problem with Fear-Based Marketing
A quick look through Exhale’s marketing shows a pattern: using the supposed “dangers” of other coffees to elevate their own. This includes swipes at instant coffee and anything not tested for “toxins.” These tactics feel less about education and more about persuasion by fear.
We believe this borders on misleading—especially for new coffee drinkers who may not know how rigorous food safety already is in the UK and EU.
What About the Free Trial?
Exhale currently offers a free trial of their coffee. While this may seem like a generous offer, we feel it’s primarily a tactic to draw customers in and commit them to a subscription model.
At Onyx Dragon, we don’t offer a free trial—not because we can’t, but because we stand firmly by the quality of our product. We believe in our coffee enough that we don’t need to convince people through gimmicks. The taste, ethics, and quality speak for themselves.

Limini vs Exhale: Two Different Approaches
Unlike Exhale, Limini Coffee doesn’t rely on health-focused hype. Their approach is simple: offer excellent coffee, transparently sourced, and freshly roasted. While Limini does not advertise SCA scores, they maintain consistent, traceable quality without relying on vague health claims or marketing jargon.
At Onyx Dragon, we feel that Exhale’s marketing approach may mislead some consumers—and possibly warrants a closer look from trading standards, given the nature of the health-related language and fear-based comparisons. It’s a shame that some companies feel it necessary to use such tactics, but we won’t.
Our Promise
We are committed to honest coffee, clear communication, and transparency. While we don’t test our coffee for mould toxins, we don’t need to—because we trust our supply chain. All beans meet food safety standards, and we never resort to scaremongering to get you to buy from us.
